Mass Layoffs

There are a variety of reasons why companies may choose to do mass layoffs. It's important to note that mass layoffs can have significant social and economic impacts, including increased unemployment, decreased consumer spending, and negative effects on the mental health and well-being of affected employees. Here is one way you can prepare for a mass layoff.

WARN Act

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act is a federal law in the United States that requires certain employers to provide advance notice to employees of an impending plant closing or mass layoff. The purpose of the law is to provide employees with time to prepare for the potential loss of their jobs and to seek other employment or training opportunities.

Under the WARN Act, covered employers must provide written notice at least 60 days in advance of a plant closing or mass layoff affecting 50 or more employees at a single site of employment. Employers must also notify state and local government officials and the labor union (if applicable) of the impending layoff or closure.

Checking for Mass Layoffs

If you want to check for potential layoffs in your state. Search WARN Act and your state. For example, if I want to check for mass layoffs in New York, I would type into the search bar WARN Act New York.
